THE BLACK MOUNTAIN
The Mont Noir in Saint-Jans-Cappel, where the first Crayencour home was located at its foot.
Culminating at 152 m, the Mont Noir takes its name from the presence in number of black pines. It is at the foot of this mountain that the first residence of the Crayencour family (the anagram of Yourcenar!) was located, a castle destroyed during the First World War. It is also worth a visit for the exceptional panorama it offers. Note that a path has been built to serve an artificial cave, dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. On the eastern slope of Mont Noir is a British military cemetery, which reminds us that the place also bears the marks of history.
