OSSUAIRE DE LUPSTEIN
Ossuary containing the bones of 3,000 peasants killed during the Peasants' War of 1525, a historical monument in Lupstein.
Built at the beginning of the 16th century by Swen Matheus, this building contains the bones of some 3,000 of the 20,000 peasants killed in the Peasants' War of 1525. Following the Reformation, peasants began to revolt and dream of better living conditions. They stormed abbeys and the Duke of Lorraine then came to Alsace to eliminate "the unbelievers and seduced Lutherans". This was the first religious war of the 16th century. 3,000 rustauds who took refuge in the Lupstein cemetery were burned alive in the church or massacred in the cemetery by the Duke. They were all placed in a mass grave before being exhumed and placed in the ossuary much later, a building now classified as a Historic Monument. In the past, he wore a plaque bearing the words "Beware of the Duke of Lorraine" but it disappeared, as did many of the bones looted before the site was protected.
