WAR MEMORIAL
When you are at the foot of the impressive monument to the death of Victory Square, it is easy to understand why it was certified «Remarkable monument of the twentieth century». The monument was realized between 1924 and 1931 by the sculptor Lucien Brasseur and architect Edouard Monestès. First of all, it is of course "the winged victory that leads the soldiers to glory and immortality". Proudly erected on his horse, she represents resistance and strength. For the little anecdote, the sculptor gave him the traits of his wife! Behind her, on both sides of her mount, there are many sweaters. Some are still standing and wearing the flags. Others, on the contrary, are already on the ground. Moreover, the sculptor represented himself as a valiant soldier. Monumental, surprising, impressive, almost imposing… it is difficult to find a qualifier to describe this Monument to the Dead perfectly. But one thing is certain, it does not leave the visitor indifferent, and he invites just as much contemplation as to a question about war and its ravages. An essential stage to enter in your tour of the city!
