IUT HOLY BEARD
Incredible institute specialized in the production of worsted and knitting wool, bearing witness to an industrial history.
The architecture of the IUT Sainte Barbe is reminiscent of the famous Motte-Bossut factory in Roubaix... and for good reason! Both buildings are among the most beautiful examples of "castles of industry". The construction of the current IUT dates back to 1866. It was carried out by the Van den Berghe-Marescaux company (the letters V and M engraved on the surrounding wall bear witness to this!) and two years later it became the property of the Van den Berghe-Desurmont company. The latter is specialised in the production of worsted wool and knitting wool. The activity of the factory continued until 1980. It was then necessary to find out how to rehabilitate this incredible place and this witness of an exceptional industrial history. In 1995, it is the IUT which puts its suitcases there. All in brick and freestone, the building has a very beautiful tower (like the one at the Roubaix factory) and a long-pitched roof. When you walk down Sainte-Barbe street, you can't miss this spectacular building!
