HOUSE CHARLES VAN DE VEEGAETE
A little distance from the city centre is needed to admire the façade of this stunning house. In the 33rd rue Pasteur, indeed one of the finest examples of Art Deco style in Tourcoing. At the origin of this house? A man that is also original and surprising: Charles Van de Veegaete. In the textile industry, Van de Veegaete orders his house to the Belgian architect Geo Bontinck. On the white limestone façade, two large sculptures draw the eye. On one side a fileuse represents the sector in which Charles Van de Veegaete has shown himself. On the other hand, a footballer represents the other great passion of the site owner. A great admirer and support of the Tourquennois club, Van de Veegaete was even an international referee! The other remarkable element of the facade is, of course, this large stained glass window that illuminates the inside stairwell. He also repeats the filature symbols by representing a fileuse and the major stages of this industry. Unfortunately the house does not visit. But the originality of its facade and the richness of its Art Deco style look very well from outside!
