Also known as the "Message Verlaine", the Musée du 5 juin 1944 is a not-to-be-missed historical site in Tourcoing. It is housed in a fully restored 15th German Army bunker, which played a crucial role in the Normandy landings. Here, you'll discover the history and workings of a site once off-limits to civilians. You're sure to marvel at the various rooms, including the technical rooms, the kitchen and the general's office, which have been recreated as they were in the past. The museum also features a number of re-enactments featuring mannequins in full period dress, complete with equipment and weaponry. Through its collections of objects and documents, the museum offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the former inhabitants of Greater Lille during the forced cohabitation with the German army. The site also evokes other aspects of the Second World War, notably the War of the Airwaves, with German, Vichy French and British radio direction-finding equipment. The D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, a symbol of freedom regained for the whole of Europe, are also among the themes covered during a visit to this address. An escape game is also available on site.
