SQUARE DE LA DODENNE
A tower built in 1449 to reinforce the fortifications surrounding the city.
In this green setting, not far from the city center, strollers can admire the Dodenne tower, a vestige of Valenciennes' tumultuous past. Built in 1449 by Albert of Bavaria, its role was to reinforce the fortifications surrounding the city. The only defense tower in France to have been built on a river, the Rhônelle, the building bears the scars of time and reconstruction. It is adjacent to the Rhônelle Garden where walks are welcome, especially since they combine nature and heritage.
