PLACE LAFAYETTE
This superb square features a remarkable fountain and is surrounded by arcades. It is home to Villeneuve's must-see market.
A must-see, this pretty square surrounded by arcades is home to the Saturday market. It owes its name to Alexandre Guyot, a doctor who wanted to improve hygiene conditions in the neighborhood by bringing running water as close as possible to people's homes. In 1835, he bequeathed a sum of money to the town to build a public fountain, on condition that the square, formerly known as Place Publique, be renamed Place Lafayette. The city accepted the bequest, but it wasn't until 1872 that the fountain was erected and the square renamed. In 2024, the square was given a facelift.
