THE CHURCH

With its fortress-like appearance, the church of Villéreal and its two towers are one of the bastide's must-see sights.
As you approach Villeréal, you can see its two tall turrets linked by a parapet walk. This fortress-church, built like the bastide in 1267, was a place of worship but also a refuge in case of attack. It was once surrounded by a deep moat that could only be crossed via a drawbridge. One of the towers has 2 chambers at the top, one of which was used as a prison. The other houses the clockwork. A true curiosity in the Gothic style with buttresses, listed as a Monument Historique.
