SAN MARTIN CHURCH
Visit of a church in Wormhout, to observe its square tower in yellow bricks, and beautiful traditional baroque pieces.
This is a hallekerk (with three equal-sized naves, also called "hall church"), a typical Flemish architecture. Its history begins in the 7th century, as a monastery and hospice. After several devastating raids, it was actually completed in 1689. Its particularity is its square tower made of yellow bricks which can be seen from far away. It lacks its spire which was destroyed during the battle of Hondschoote (revolutionary wars of 1793). Inside, one notices especially beautiful traditional baroque pieces.
