OLD SHORE SQUARE
The history of this place is confused with that of Arras. At the beginning of the th century, after obtaining permission, Arras built an inner port. Indeed, until then, La was navigable only to Douai. Huge work began in 1605 (the boats were to cross the walls to arrive in the port) and fifteen years later, the first boat entered the port of Arras. Becoming obsolete, it will be filled at the end of the th century. Rue du Coclipas, two signs with anchors and ships remind this ancient port activity. On this square is the Saint-Eloi hospice, founded in the th century by a goldsmith: Robert Leriche. Legend tells us that he would have lost his children in an epidemic and that this tragedy would have decided to devote his fortune to the poorest. The neighbouring house dates back to the th century. It was built by a rich merchant merchant and dressed with a water balcony the next century.
