The squares represent a unique European ensemble of 155 Flemish Baroque facades.
The two famous squares of Arras, the Grand-Place and the Place des Héros, were built in the 16th century. They are the jewels of the city and represent a unique ensemble of 155 Flemish baroque facades. Their narrow facades allowed at the time (and still allow) more businesses to have a street frontage. The grain market was the rhythm of life on the Grand-Place from the 11th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Look up: the ears of wheat sculpted on many facades remind us of this agricultural abundance from the plains of Arras.
