SAINT-SATURNIN-DE-JOUERS CHAPEL
Romanesque chapel on the route of the via Tolosana of the roads to Santiago de Compostela, the symbols P and X in a circle form a monogram
Located on the Via Tolosana route of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, this Romanesque chapel, whose oldest parts date from the 12th century, has long been a refuge for pilgrims and today a place of passage for walkers. It was then associated with a lay abbey located on the other side of the road. In the context of the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, it was burned by the troops of Jeanne d'Albret. Then it was rebuilt in the 16th century before being restored in 1952. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1986, this chapel has some remarkable features, notably its 12th century porch. You will also see near one of the windows a chrism, inscribed in a circle where the letters P and X form a monogram that testifies to the age of the place. It was indeed the symbol of Christianity adopted by the first Christian emperors. Magnificent modillions on its chevet are also visible and finally a large sundial has been installed on the south façade of the bell tower. A chapel steeped in history to be discovered on the way to Compostela or during a visit of the surroundings!
