The belfry now has four levels and access to the floors is through the southeast corner turret.
In 1346, valour and loyalty to the French crown earned the town of Béthune its very first belfry. In 1388, following its collapse, the aldermen were authorized to erect a second belfry. The carillon was installed in 1546 and completed in 1553 by Charles V with bells from Thérouanne Abbey. During the First World War, bombing raids destroyed the belfry, but the surrounding houses protected its structure. Today, the belfry has four levels, with access to the upper floors via the south-east corner turret.
