The belfry now has four levels and access to the floors is through the southeast corner turret.
In 1346, valour and loyalty to the French crown earned the town of Béthune its very first belfry. In 1388, following its collapse, the aldermen were authorised to erect a second belfry. The carillon was installed in 1546 and was completed in 1553 by Charles V with the bells of the abbey of Thérouanne. During the First World War, bombardments destroyed the belfry. The houses surrounding it protect its structure. The belfry now stands on four levels and access to the upper floors is via the south-east corner turret.
