THE FACADES OF THE MAIN SQUARE
The facades of Béthune's Grand'Place are part of the charm of the city's motley-looking town center.
Béthune's Grand'Place was the target of numerous bombardments, and over 90% of it was destroyed during the First World War. Architects Jacques Alleman, Paul Dégez and Léon Guthmann were commissioned to rebuild it. Wishing to respect Béthune's past while striving for modernity, they opted for an eclectic style, blending Art Deco and regionalist architecture. Today, this bold choice is one of the reasons for the town center's originality and charm!
