BOULOGNE BELFRY
This belfry was the only monument of the city spared by the bombings of the Second World War.
Built on the orders of the Count of Boulogne at the end of the 12th century, this 35-metre high keep was given to the town's burghers at the beginning of the 13th century, who made it their belfry, a symbol of communal freedom. Its function was to house the bell that set the pace of village life. The octagonal floor dates from the 18th century. The belfry was the only monument of the city spared by the bombings of the Second World War. In 2005, it was classified as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, just like the other belfries in the region.
