LE BEFFROI (BELFRY)
This belfry, recently renovated, is the most modern of the listed belfries in the region.
It was decided to build the belfry in 1885, at the same time as the new town hall, to mark the merger of the communes of Calais and Saint-Pierre. After work was halted during the Great War, it was completed and inaugurated in 1925. It boasts the most modern listed belfry in the region. Four knights covered in gold leaf fix the four cardinal points at the top, above the 4 clock faces. Its weathervane is a dragon, the traditional guardian of treasures. Its current electric carillon still plays the tune of Gentille Annette, by composer Boieldieu (1775-1834), created in the early 19th century. Unlike other older buildings, the tower is entirely empty. Only a staircase furnished the interior: it was used only by the technician responsible for setting the clock to summer or winter time. In 2012, the year it was opened to the public, over 15,000 people climbed its 175 steps or took advantage of the translucent elevator to reach the walkway. From its 75-metre height, the belfry offers a panoramic view of the city and surrounding area. A guided tour is a great way to observe the traces of the city's historical development. Tours can also be combined with a visit to the town hall. Along with 22 of its peers, the Calais belfry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no less!
