LES BOURGEOIS DE CALAIS
Bronze sculpture installed in Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, one of Rodin's most famous works in Calais.
One of Rodin's most famous works! Commissioned by the city, the bronze sculpture was originally installed in 1895 opposite the Parc Richelieu. It was not moved to Place de l'Hôtel de Ville until after the Second World War. The sculpture immortalizes the sacrifice of six men who, in 1347, after a grueling siege, handed over the keys to the city to Edward III, King of England. Their lives were saved by the intervention of Philippa de Hainaut, the King's wife. The work is strikingly realistic and fascinating!
