The lively center of Calais, today a superb witness to its history.
A lively part of the town, the Place d'Armes today bears witness to a superb piece of history: the Watchtower, Calais' oldest building. Rising to 39 meters, it is a model of the defensive architecture of its time. Destroyed in 1580 and rebuilt in 1681, it has successively served as a lighthouse, a dovecote and a military post. The tower is not open to the public for security reasons, but you can still admire its grandeur when you visit.
