SAINT-PIERRE D'ARETTE
Magnificent church with listed furnishings, including a magnificent altarpiece
This magnificent Baroque church was built in 1693, then almost totally destroyed in the earthquake of August 13, 1967. Saint-Pierre d'Arette was then completely rebuilt from scratch. The church boasts fine listed furniture dating from the 17th century, including a magnificent altarpiece. A small departure from the original edifice are the stained-glass windows, a modern work by Paul Ambille depicting pastoral scenes and images of the earthquake. You can also see the two present-day bells, weighing 800 and 400 kilos. They were saved during the earthquake by a feat of technical prowess on the part of the fire department. These two bells were cast in Tarbes in 1893, from the single bell purchased in 1793 from the parish of Sainte-Croix d'Oloron. They replaced the two original bells that had been requisitioned by the Convention for the needs of the revolutionary army.
