FORT D'ALPRECH
Visit of the fort built between 1875 and 1877 in Portel, with a unique setting.
From antiquity, the place was considered a privileged defence and watchtower post. A first lighthouse existed there between 1842 and the Second World War, then was rebuilt in 1962, and then fully automated in 1975. But it is above all the fort of Alprech that catches the eye. Built between 1875 and 1877 as part of the Séré de Rivière system of fortifications, the Alprech battery, armed with guns and howitzers, housed powder magazines and casemates designed to house some 100 men. During the Occupation, the Germans installed radars there. Abandoned and covered by vegetation, Fort Alprech was restored in 1999. In January 2016, a social integration project was set up on the site to try to combat the devastating effects of time on the structure of the building: filling in the gaps, restoring the loopholes, the fort was given a new look. The Chemin des Douaniers, starting from the fort, allows visitors to discover the fauna and flora of the surrounding area. Visiting these ruins alone in this unique setting is a real pleasure!
