Museum exhibiting multiple objects and photos of life in the region during the Second World War
Standard casemate (also called bunker in English), the one of Marckolsheim was changed into a Memorial to remember the terrible fights which took place from June 15th to 17th 1940. Opened since 1972, this memorial allows the visitor to enter the casemate of the3rd line n° 35 during the three days of battle, after which the city of Marckolsheim was destroyed at more than 80 %.
Installed in a casemate, it reconstitutes the premises as they were at the time of the events, with their firing chambers, their dormitories, their command post, etc. Outside annexes recall other historical events: like this Russian heavy howitzer, symbolizing the "Malgré-nous", or a half-track of the 1st DFL, the Hartmannswillerkopf tank of the2nd DB, a self-propelled gun of the Leclerc division, a Bofors anti-aircraft gun and a Bailey bridge element.
Inside the bunker, there are various rooms, such as the command post, the dormitory and the ammunition bunker. Also on display are a variety of artifacts and a photo exhibit of life in the area during World War II.
Guided tours for groups are available by appointment. Store on the spot, with books, postcards, posters...
On the practical side, please note that due to the measures and the sanitary protocol, the entrance is limited to 10 people at the same time. Do not hesitate to inquire about the conditions via the website before your visit.
