THE LEANING TOWER
Tower that housed a battery with a fire direction post at Oye-Plage.
That tower was a decoy! The Germans ordered its construction in 1942: it housed a battery with a fire direction post. More than a hundred Russian prisoners took up the task. To deceive the enemy, the building was given the appearance of a church, inspired by Mardyck's (with stained glass windows, a clock and a large metal cross, which have disappeared). On September 7, 1944, the Germans attempted to blow up this disguised bunker, but the explosive charge used was insufficient, so the tower remained standing and strangely tilted, earning it its name.
