ST. BLAISE'S CHAPEL - SINDELSBERG
Chapel remnant of a convent of Benedictine nuns, with old wall paintings, frescoes and symbols of the evangelists
The only vestige of a Benedictine convent founded in 1115 at the top of Sindelsberg, the Chapel of St. Blaise is a very old pilgrimage site honouring St. Blaise, which protected pilgrims from diseases of the throat. At that time, Marmoutier was prosperous and very spiritual. In its choir, it conceals ancient 16th century mural paintings, the symbols of the evangelists appear in the forechoir, other frescos represent the Crucifixion, a Virgin of mercy, angels carrying the instruments of the Passion. The paintings on the balustrade in the 1619 gallery show the virtues and benefits of Saint Blaise. The south side door is round-arched vaulted, the east tower and the three-sided apse date from the 14th century. Visiting from the outside is simple, just go there, but to see the inside, you have to make an appointment, so don't hesitate to ask the Tourist Office for more information.
