THE GASSION CASTLE
This private castle, classified as a Bâtiments de France, can be visited with a historian guide during the Heritage Day
Burned during the religious wars, this castle, partly rebuilt in Renaissance style, was finally fully restored in 1650 by the brother of marshal Gassion, Jean de Gassion, President of the Parliament of Navarre. In the eighteenth century, it belonged to Abadie Arrast then in 1883, it was occupied by a family member, an ethnologist who worked for ten years in Ethiopia. After a long period of desertion, a rich American lived there and gave it back to its former glory for a few years, offering social gatherings. With its U-shaped form and exposed stone walls, it is reminiscent of Loire castles. Now classified as Batiments de France, it is occupied by the Saint Bernadette College. This private castle can be visited with a historian guide during the Heritage Day in mid-September and during the open day of Sainte-Bernadette late May and during the "Castle Festival" in mid-July.
