THE CASTLE MOUND
Motte to protect the collegiate church from possible Viking attackers in Saint-Omer.
Just a stone's throw from the cathedral, the motte castrale was built in the 10th century by Baudoin I, Count of Flanders, to protect the collegiate church from possible Viking attackers. The building was for a long time the nerve center of the political power of the region, in particular the castellany of Saint-Omer. In 1761, a Vauban-style military prison was built there. Today, the site has been restored and is open for special events and festivals. The garden also offers breathtaking views of the city of Saint-Omer and the surrounding area!
