THE RUINS OF THE ABBEY OF SAINT-BERTIN
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bertin, witness to a powerful medieval abbey, now partially destroyed.
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bertin was built in the 7th century, at the gateway to the Marais Audomarois, by monks sent by Omer to evangelize the region. It was one of the three most powerful abbeys in northern France. It was partially destroyed during the French Revolution. In 1830, the municipality undertook the destruction of the building, sparing the western tower, which collapsed in 1946. The ruins are strikingly beautiful and poetic.
