THE RUINS OF THE ABBEY OF SAINT-BERTIN
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bertin, witness to a powerful medieval abbey, now partially destroyed.
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bertin was built in the 7th century, at the gates of the marsh, by monks missioned by Omer to evangelize the region. It was one of the three most powerful abbeys in the north of the kingdom. It prospered throughout the Middle Ages, until the Revolution when it was partly destroyed. In 1830, the municipality undertook the destruction of the building, sparing the western tower, which collapsed three years after the bombings of 1943.
