THE BARRACKS
17th century barracks built to house soldiers who were to be separated from the rest of the population in Saint-Omer
This 17th century barracks was built in its time to house the soldiers who were to be separated from the rest of the population. Buildings had been erected under Spanish rule, but new constructions were undertaken according to Vauban's directives, by the French, including the beautiful officers' pavilion to the left of the entrance. If the famous engineer of King Louis XIV did not build a citadel in Saint-Omer, it is certainly because this barracks, the adjoining castle and the bastion of the castle on the ramparts fulfilled this function very well between the three of them.
