THE HOLY ALDEGONDE FOUNTAIN
Fountain commemorating the opening of the Neufossé canal between the Aa and the Lys in 1756 in Saint-Omer.
This fountain is the only remnant of the former church of Sainte-Aldegonde, ruined by the fall of its bell tower in 1800. It commemorates the opening of the Neufossé canal between the Aa and the Lys in 1756. The statues above the central niche represent these two rivers. Two of the vases of the fountain were carved by François Chifflart, painter, sculptor and engraver from Audomar. The fountain was classified as a historical monument in 1981, and restored between 2009 and 2012.
