THE HOLY ALDEGONDE FOUNTAIN
Fountain commemorating the opening of the Neufossé canal between the Aa and Lys rivers in Saint-Omer in 1756.
This fountain is the only remnant of the former Sainte-Aldegonde church, ruined when its bell tower fell in 1800. It commemorates the opening of the Neufossé canal between the Aa and Lys rivers in 1756, represented by the two female statues above the central niche. Two of the fountain's vases were carved by François Chifflart, an artist from Auvergne. The fountain was listed as a Monument Historique in 1981, and has been restored several times since.
