BELVAL ABBEY
A former Cistercian abbey with a cheese factory in a superb setting in the heart of the Ternois, which hosts cultural exhibitions.
In the heart of the Ternois, in a green setting, 3 kilometres from Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise, the Abbey of Belval is a haven of serenity, a bearer of meaning and a vector of links, according to its motto. This castle, built in the 18th century, was bought by an abbot in 1893 to found a Cistercian abbey of Trappistine sisters, under the patronage of Saint Benedict Labre. The site was enlarged from the 1930s onwards and the Belval sisters transformed the barn into a cheese dairy. The Belval cheeses were born and are now listed by the Conservatoire des Arts Culinaires as part of the region's heritage inventory. When the religious community left in 2012, the site was taken over by a structure for integration through economic activity. It has made it possible to maintain the various activities linked to the history of the abbey: reception, resourcing, the cheese dairy and the sale of monastic products. The site regularly hosts cultural exhibitions.
