Canadian physician John McCrae was chief of medical services at the Canadian General Hospital in Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1916. He died of pneumonia in January 1918 and was buried in Wimereux. He is the author of the famous poem In Flanders Fields (1915). An excerpt can be read on the cemetery memorial. "We are the dead. Short days ago, we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved and now we lie In Flanders fields".
