Tin mining in the Nozay and Abbaretz region dates back to Gallo-Roman times. But it was at the beginning of the 1950s that the open-pit mining began, which gave rise to the slag heap that overlooks the site today. The end of this intense mining activity came at the end of the 1950s and it was in 2004 that the tin mining concession was definitively terminated. From this activity, two complementary sites were created: the pond dug by extraction and the slag heap, made up of the accumulation of mine tailings. To discover this historic and natural site, you can follow the Mine trail, a marked 8.9 km route starting from Abbaretz (about 2 hours). Around the pond, you can walk in the shade of oaks and young chestnut and birch woods to be surprised by the volcanic appearance of the slag heap, or prefer water activities such as diving or water skiing. Let yourself be tempted by the 200 steps that separate you from the top of the slag heap. From the top of its 80 meters, you will then enjoy a breathtaking view of the region. A pleasant hike to discover almost lunar landscapes!
