Celebrated for 40 years, with San Panzar Day on Saturday, traditional dances, Peñas cavalcades..
The Carnival of Bayonne has been celebrated since 1480! Forbidden by the Church at that time because it was considered a pagan rite, the population, in spite of everything, gathered in the Saint-Esprit district where the parade began. San Pansart, a central and fictitious character of the Carnival in Gascony and the Basque Country, was judged and condemned. For more than 40 years, Bayonne has been reviving this ancestral tradition by dressing up according to the carnival rite. As a prelude, festivities are reserved for children from nursery and elementary schools. Cavalcades and various animations.
