L'EUSKO : LA MONNAIE LOCALE DU PAYS BASQUE
Your holidays in Eusko!
Two currencies circulate in the Basque Country: the Euro of course and the Eusko, a currency that relocates the economy by circulating only on the Basque territory to boost the local economy, the ecological transition, peasant agriculture, local shops and the Basque language.
What is the eusko?
Created in 2013, the eusko is a local currency that complements the euro (1 eusko = 1 euro), as there are dozens in France, the largest in Europe since 2018.
Changing euros into eusko is a new experience for holidaymakers to get off the beaten track and discover hundreds of good addresses, spot real local products on the markets, encourage exchanges with local producers and traders, etc.
Using the eusko also means actively participating during your holidays in the ecological transition and in the preservation of employment in the region, as the eusko develops relations between local economic players, and therefore short circuits.
How to use the Eusko ?
Eusko has 2.5 million eusko in circulation and, in terms of members, 4,000 individuals (in a territory of 300,000 inhabitants), 1,100 professionals, 27 municipalities and local authorities.
What about you?
- Eusko holidays" envelopes are on sale in most tourist offices in the Basque Country: for €20 or €50, they include 18 or 48 eusko banknotes and a €2 membership fee.
- You can also open an online Vacances en eusko account for 2 €, load it free of charge with your bank card, then download the euskopay application to pay in eusko with your smartphone, geolocate the addresses where you can pay in eusko, benefit from good deals, and even withdraw tickets from one of the 32 eusko exchange offices spread throughout the territory.
