BAYONNE ARENA
Neo-Moorish style bullring with Mudejar inspiration in Bayonne, the largest in the southwest, to discover the bullfighting tradition
Bayonne is the oldest bullfighting town in France. One of the very first elements found in the municipal archives dates back to 1289. It is a decree of the Bayonne aldermen which regulated the running of oxen, cows and toros in the streets of the city. It is the oldest bullfighting document in the world, and it already mentions a tradition! Later on, ephemeral bullrings were built in different districts: St Esprit, Allées Marines, Allées Paulmy, before the construction in 1893 of the Marcel Dangou Plaza. Of neo-Moorish style with its Mudejar inspiration, knowing that today we can say that the Plaza de Toros of Bayonne is the biggest of the South-West, with 10 000 places. Historic appointments have marked the times, with the greatest visitors who have come to Bayonne around the Festival Taurine. A tradition that lasts since every summer, the arenas come alive during 3 prestigious férias around the aficionados and peñas that animate these periods. Every year, at noon, every morning of the bullfight, the drawing of lots and the separation of the toros is carried out, live on screen with comments, under the stands of the door A. Various animations are proposed by the bullfighting clubs of the city and exhibitions of bullfighting art are organized under the corridors of the bullring. Bullfighting artists from all walks of life, well known or still unknown to the general public, are gathered here. With exceptional acoustics, concerts and shows also take place in the bullring. Programmation on site.
