LES REMPARTS
Ramparts built in Vauban's time to protect the town
Built at the time of Vauban to protect the city, these ramparts combine 3 systems of fortification built over the centuries: the Citadel, the Old Castle and the New Castle. In the town, there is a large double belt of old stones, the Porte d'Espagne, a Roman and then a medieval wall with its towers, the Porte des Deux Soeurs, the Porte du Bourreau, a 16th century wall known as the François I wall and in the lower town, the Porte de Mousserolles with its drawbridge. Today, they have been converted into a beautiful promenade with a nature theatre and playground.
