The Maison des Hommes et des Techniques (industrial memory) is located in the imposing Ateliers et Chantiers Navals building.
The Maison des Hommes et des Techniques, housed in the Ateliers et Chantiers Navals, is a non-profit association created in 1994 to preserve the industrial memory of this historic site. This impressive site regularly attracts visitors to the Elephant and the Galerie des Machines.
Since the departure of Bougainville in 1987, the last ship to be built here, and the closure of Chantiers Dubigeon, many people are unaware that Nantes, a maritime city, played a leading role in shipbuilding for centuries. So, for over 20 years, the association has offered the public numerous exhibitions dedicated to this theme, as well as to working-class cultures, the world of work, the history of the Île de Nantes, the Loire, and the city's maritime and river past.
A permanent exhibition entitled "Bâtisseurs de Navires" (Shipbuilders) is specifically devoted to the naval trades, their technical evolution, workers' working conditions and union struggles, as well as the major changes on the Île. The association welcomes groups on request.
In addition, a documentation center, in collaboration with the association Histoire de la Construction Navale à Nantes, offers a directory of 2,500 ships built in the region since 1248. Here you'll find original plans, photographs, period tools, books, videos and archives on the maritime history of Nantes and the surrounding region.
