OUR LADY OF BELLOCQ
Built in the 13th century in Bellocq and well preserved, it is one of the oldest churches in Béarn; a place full of history.
It is one of the oldest Béarnaise churches still well preserved. Built in the 13th century under the Viscount Gaston VII at the same time as the bastide of Bellocq, its architecture, its nave and the sculptures of its portals are in Romanesque style, witnesses of medieval Béarn. Fortified, it was part of the city's defences. Its bell tower is a real keep, a key watchtower on the western border of the Viscounty of Béarn opposite the English Guyenne. Originally, the entire building did not have an opening, the current windows were drilled in the 19th century. The main gate is remarkable because it is enhanced by some historically interesting sculptures. One of them represents a coat of arms with Béarn arms and two cows whose steps are reversed compared to traditional representations. The second is the oldest representation of a character wearing a beret. It proves that this hat is indeed originally from Béarnais and not Basque. In the nave you can see a remarkable altarpiece. A place steeped in history to discover!
