BEOST CASTLE
This castle adjoining the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, is a lay abbey, registered as a historical monument
Adjacent to the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, the castle of Béost stands out from the landscape thanks to its tower. It is a secular abbey, listed as a historical monument. A stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in the 12th century, it became a seigneurial residence in the 16th century when it was bought by Bertrand d'Espalungue. Today, this site belongs to the association Los Auzelets, which has been in charge of its restoration and maintenance since 1951 through voluntary youth workcamps, as well as with groups of young people in difficult social situations and scouts from France. The whole building is still marked by history: a former fortified house, it still has its square tower from the 12th century, as well as some elements of a large hall; mullioned windows were added later, as well as wings around the tower, a carriage entrance and a beautifully arranged terraced garden. You can visit this site by contacting the association and discover the history of this typical building of the region.
