Le Grand Café is an old café dating back to 1864, a mecca for local life. It was run by Aristide Briand's father (statesman, Nobel Peace Prize winner). Spared by the destruction of the city in 1943, it continued to be a café until the late 1960s and then hosted various commercial activities before being bought by the City in 1994 and becoming an exhibition space dedicated to contemporary artists in 1997. A place of mediation, exchange and reflection on the art of its time, Le Grand Café offers a series of actions that allow everyone to discover, familiarize themselves with or deepen their curiosity about contemporary art. Meetings with artists, art history conferences or film screenings are organised around each exhibition. Now recognized as a "centre of contemporary art" by the Ministry of Culture, the site raises questions related to space, territory, architecture and urbanity, but also to the heritage of modernity, new forms of community, the world city.... These are themes frequently explored by the invited artists. Particular attention is also paid to the scenes of Central and Latin America.
