AQUARIUM DE BIARRITZ
Aquarium of Biarritz organizing an original visit of the seabed to discover the species that populate the Atlantic coast
Facing the Rocher de la Vierge, the Aquarium, with its Art Deco building from the 1930s, invites you to discover about fifty aquariums. It was one of the first oceanographic institutes in France, since it was the visionary Marquis Léopold de Folin who had the idea at the end of the 19th century. Opened to the public in 1933, it has undergone many waves of renovation with a grandiose extension from 3,500 m² to 7,000 m² in 2011. It offers an original visit of the ocean floor. Each year, more than 300,000 visitors come to marvel at the beauty of the oceans and its inhabitants. The visit begins in front of the basins of the Bay of Biscay: jellyfish, octopus, seahorses ... to discover the species that inhabit the Atlantic coast. After a dive into the cetacean gallery and the history of fishing in the Basque Country, you enter the turtle cave for a surprising face-to-face encounter with several specimens, including Alice the loggerhead turtle... Stop in front of the seal tank, the Aquarium's darlings! The seals' meal is one of the highlights of the visit, where young and old alike enjoy watching them play and gobble up kilos of mackerel, every day at 10:30 am and 5 pm. Then, you will find the mangrove and a coral reef of 11 meters long! Fishes with original colors and improbable shapes twirl under your eyes. And admire all the residents of the giant aquarium of 1.5 million liters of water where 7 species of sharks, barracudas, rays evolve. A show that will take your breath away!
