LA VILLA BELZA
An establishment with an exceptional setting, overlooking the beach of the Basque Coast on one side, with a flashy look
Dominating the Côte des Basques beach on one side, the Gouffre du Diable and the Port Vieux on the other, proudly perched on its rocky outcrop overlooking the mountains in the distance, you can't miss this iconic Biarritz residence, Villa Belza. With its flashy allure overlooking the waves, it is THE most emblematic figure in Biarritz. Photogenic to a fault (as much so as the Rocher de la Vierge!), she's the muse on all postcards, photos and tourist images. Before it became a showpiece, it was a farmer's modest plot of land. Architect Alphonse Bertrand only gave it its rectangular shape in 1882, before Dominique Morin added his neo-medieval keep and turret. Its mysterious airs have never ceased to fuel dark legends of witchcraft and ghosts... hence its name Belza; black in Basque. In the Roaring Twenties, converted into a Russian cabaret called Château Basque, it was the scene of sumptuous galas and sumptuous evenings that would go down in history. The carefree era came to an end: divided and poorly maintained, it was devastated by two fires and left to its sad fate. Finally renovated and saved from ruin (but sold in apartment lots), it was listed by the city in 1997. The Villa underwent a major renovation of its exteriors from 2015 to 2018. The seafront road, now pedestrianized, gives the place even more authenticity. Today, you can rent this prestigious residence with its enchanting atmosphere.
