CHAPEL OF UR ONEA
This chapel reminds us that Bidart was a village of whale hunters who often needed heavenly protection
Uronea, Ouronéa means "good water" in Basque. It is a center of pilgrimage: the statue of the Virgin with the Hawthorn and the Child in gilded wood exposed inside would have been found in the chapel, after having been carried away two days before. The spring - today not drinkable - contiguous to the chapel, was reputed to be effective against skin diseases. This lovely little chapel was built in 1704 and reminds us that Bidart was a village of whale hunters who often needed heavenly protection. Procession every Pentecost.
