CHATEAU D’ILBARRITZ
Castle overlooking the ocean with a carved wooden staircase and rooms, one of which housed the largest private organ
In the golf district of Ilbarritz, a huge, imposing mansion overlooks the ocean. It belonged to the mysterious Baron Albert de l'Espée, who had it built between 1895 and 1897. It was a five-storey building, 40 m high, with a sumptuous, finely carved wooden staircase and numerous rooms. A superb hall housed the largest organ ever built for a private home. During the First World War, the château was converted into a hospital. An astonishing, even magical home!
