ABBEY OF OUR LADY OF PORT-DU-SALUT
Cistercian abbey with hotel, bookstore and store of monastic products in Entrammes, a good address for meditation
In 1815, this monastery was the first to be re-established after the Revolution. It owes its earthly glory to its cheeses, the production of which began in the 1850s. Yes, as early as 1873, the Port-salut cheese landed on the Parisian shelves! Registered in 1874, the Port-du-Salut brand (later abbreviated to Port-du-Salut) was to travel the world. Unfortunately, in 1959, unable to ensure production, the monks sold their manufacturing secret to the Société agricole des Fermiers réunis. Since then, the Cistercians of Entrammes have found other work to meet their needs. However, they continue to offer the best welcome to those who come to knock on the abbey's doors, whether for a few hours or several days. Whether you are simply curious, or wish to say a few prayers, or are a retreatant staying in the guesthouse, or feel called to enter into the Cistercian spirituality lived at Notre-Dame-du-Port-du-Salut, the community will be delighted to welcome you. If you wish, you can meet with a monk for a talk or for the sacrament of reconciliation. You will be asked to help maintain the atmosphere of silence in the hostel, which is why meals are taken in silence. Those who wish to do so may freely take part in liturgical services such as Mass. At the entrance to the abbey, you will find a shop selling monastic products and a small bookshop.
