THE STRAW CORNICE
The Corniche of Pail occupies a remarkable and fragile natural space (classified ZNIEFF). This 350 m high corniche consists of an armorican sandstone ridge, a hard sedimentary rock, 350 to 500 million years old, between Villaines-la-Juhel and Pre-en-Pail on 450 ha in 3 zones: lanterns and woodlands, wood and meadows. Rural roads allow you to discover the different lanterns, each with its specific bruises, wet landes, mid-humid halfway, dry lanterns. These lanterns colonized the areas left naked by deforestation for firewood and grazing. On these poor soils, the old ones had the bruises, ferns and molinia for litter and mattresses. Today, landowners are sensitized to preserve this land, a transitional vegetation before the forest, that it is a matter of hurting and exploiting to conserve outstanding species. This corniche along the D 20 towards Villaines-la-Juhel can also be reached by bicycle or car.
