LE FORT DE SOCOA
Important and unavoidable building of the city of Ciboure, a fortress built by Henri IV to protect Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
The Fort of Socoa is an important and unavoidable building in the city. The history of the Fort begins under Henri IV. Anxious to protect Saint-Jean-de-Luz from the Spanish enemy, he planned to build a fortress. Differences of opinion between the various communes caused the project to fail. The Fort of Socoa will be built only under the reign of Louis XIII. In 1636, the Spanish took the fort and named the citadel Fort of Castile. A few years later, French sovereignty was re-established and the work was completed and became the Fort of Socoa.
