LA MAISON RAVEL
The birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel, built by a wealthy Cibourdian shipowner, now houses the tourist office
The Dutch-style birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel, born on March 7, 1875, where he lived for just 3 or 4 months, faces the fishing port of Ciboure and its pediment, which is unique in the region. It was built by a wealthy Ciboure merchant and shipowner, Esteban d'Etcheto, who was fascinated by the houses he saw in Amsterdam. The house was made famous at the wedding of Louis XIV and the Infanta of Spain, when Cardinal Mazarin stayed in it for the festivities. Listed as a historic monument, Ravel's house is distinguished by its typical architecture.
