THE SAINT-JULIAN GATE
What a joy to enter the old town through this door! A model of medieval military architecture, this châtelet door, built in the 15th century, is the emblem of the town and the pride of the people of Fertois. It underlines the end of the Hundred Years War and the appearance of artillery with its gunboats which received pierriers and couleuvrines. The Saint-Julien gate and its two towers withstood numerous sieges, as in 1590 during the famous episode of the Ewe-lambs, when soldiers disguised as women tried in vain to trap the Protestant troops of the Prince of Conti. This gate is, of course, classified as a Historic Monument.
